John Metzler: From Carousel Operator to Carousel Creator
John Metzler was a White Catholic man who was incarcerated for forgery on September 9, 1912, at age 25. Born in Germany, Metzler moved to Philadelphia when he was 20 and worked as a carousel operator before entering Eastern State Penitentiary. John Metzler was sentenced to 4-10 years in prison but was released on September 9, 1916, exactly 4 years after imprisonment. During his last year, Metzler donated 30 cents to the Children's Christmas Fund. Please play the digital carousel below to learn more about Meltzer’s craft during his time at Eastern State Penitentiary.
